In terms of the practical functions of recall ratio and pertinency ratio, this paper presents some views different from traditional concepts. It holds, after demonstrations, that recall ratio and pertinency ratio are not suitable to be used as evaluation indices for retrieval system. It also presents the concept of subject depth to strengthen the guiding of indexing work.
