安陆方言的地名不但记录着城市、乡村的历史变迁,而且具有浓郁的楚文化特色:反映了人们对和平、安定生活的向往,对自然、神、吉祥物的崇拜,也反映了“崇巫重卜”的楚文化风俗,还体现了楚文化中的经济生活和宗法制度,有的安陆地名记载了一些历史故事、传说,体现了人们的“念祖之情、爱国之心和忠君之忱热情”。
