China and Indonesia are friendly neighbors with traditional friendship stretching for a long time. Sino-lndonesia bilateral relationship stands out prominently in China's neighborhood diplomatic strategies. Economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has always been an important component of bilateral relations, and achieved remarkable results, hence laying a solid material foundation and providing a powerful incentive for the development of bilateral relations. Immediately after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding to restore direct trade in 1985, the bilateral trade volume jumped to $430 million. After the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1990 in particular, trade volume achieved relatively high growth, reaching $1.18 billion the same year. Since then, the annual trade volume between China and Indonesia grew in doubledigit, breaking through $2 billion in 1992. Due to the impacts of Asian financial crisis in 1997 and economic recession in the developed world, the trade volume between China and Indonesia once experienced a trend of decline and a minus growth. However, this trend was reversed in 2002, with bilateral trade rising to $7.9 billion. In 2003, bilateral trade further recovered and achieved a breakthrough of $10 billion. In recent years, the bilateral trade volume has maintained a rapid growth and reached $16.789 billion in 2005 (Data are shown in the attached Table). Indonesia is currently the 17th largest trading partner for China, and China ranks the 4th among Indonesia's trading partners.
