The Awkward Situation Between the Pulling Forces of Tradition and Modernity——Chinese Discourse Utterance in the Historical Course of Modernization

中国的现代化是在一种十分被动的历史境况中发轫的,是在一种双重困境的夹击下艰难前行的:一方面,西方的现代文化占着强势地位,另一方面,封建主义农业文明形成的强大的皇权和顽固的农本思想根深蒂固。传统和现代的拉力使现代化进程中的中国话语言说常常扭曲变形,处于尴尬的状态。全盘性反传统就是20世纪中国最尴尬的话语表达。这种尴尬的话语表达实质上也是中国现代化历史进程尴尬行状的话语表征。

Chinese modernization started in a rather passive historical circumstance and proceeded in a dual dilemma. On the one hand, western modern culture was dominant and on the other the powerful royalty and the obstinate thought of agricultural foundation produced by the feudal agricultural civilization was deep-rooted. The pulling forces of tradition and modernity made Chinese discourse utterance in the process of modernization often twisted and awkward. The most awkward utterance in the 20th century China was the wholesale anti-tradition. This awkwardness represented the awkward situation of historical course of Chinese modernization.
