阿富汗东北部地区是古代东、西方民族的汇聚之地。在前伊斯兰时期,该地区的民族构成在原来东伊朗语民族巴克特里亚人的基础上,先后融入了希腊人、斯基泰人、大月氏人、波斯人、哒人和突厥人等。该地区在历史上先后被称为巴克特里亚和吐火罗斯坦,这种地理称谓的变化折射出当地古代民族的变迁轨迹。

Northeast Afghanistan was the place where ancient ethnos from the east and west met. Apart from the native Bactrians, the ancient ethnos in this region were made up of Greeks, Scythians, Dayuezhi, Persians, Hephthalites and Turks. The change in the region＇s geographical names from Bactria to Tocharistan reflects the evolvement of the local ancient ethnos.
