Ingenious Form Transplanting——Comments on Jiang Feng's Chinese Translation of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

罗伯特.弗洛斯特的著名格律诗Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening在意象、结构、韵律3个方面堪称典范,江枫将有关的形式特征移植于译诗《雪夜林边》,可谓独具匠心、妙手天成。这是译者与诗人心灵契合的结果,也是直译和意译的成功结合。形式移植的确对诗歌翻译至关重要,但摆脱形式的束缚而又能传神达意的译文也应能接受。只有诗歌翻译的多元化才能带来诗歌翻译的繁荣。

By a detailed study on the formal features of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening written by Robert Frost and the methods in which Jiang Feng transplants those features into his Chinese translation, this paper shows Jiang Feng＇s ingenious form transplanting achieved firsdy by the affinity between the poet and the translator and secondly by the successful combination of literal and liberal translations. This author suggests that transplanting form is indeed fundamental for poetry translation, but translations conveying the spirit of the original without keeping its formal constraints should also be accepted. It is the multidimensional development of poetry translation that can bring about the prosperity of poetry translation.
