Contrastive Rhetoric: Its Development and New Research Directions

对比修辞学研究跨语言、跨文化写作的差异与相似之处,是当今语言学研究的热门领域之一,对了解和认识跨语言、跨文化写作上的文化差异产生了极大的影响,并且将继续影响英语作为第二语言和作为外语的写作教学与研究。在简要讨论对比修辞学的理论基础与评述Kap lan的传统对比修辞学理论及其缺陷的基础上,主要介绍讨论对比修辞学的发展及其新的研究方向,旨在为我国的英语写作教学与研究提供一些启示与理论指导。

Contrastive rhetoric, one of the hot subjects in today＇s linguistics, examines differences and similarities in writing across languages and cultures. It has had an appreciable impact on our understanding of cultural differences in writing across languages and cultures, and it will continue to have an effect on the teaching of ESL and EFL writing. This paper begins with a brief discussion of the theory of linguistic relativity, the cornerstone of contrastive rhetoric. Then Kaplan＇s traditional contrastive rhetoric and the flaws in it are briefly reviewed. Finally, this paper focuses on the development of contrastire rhetoric and its new research directions, aiming at providing some theoretical implications for the teaching of ESL writing in our country.
