A High Incidence of Genital Teratogeny Found in the Flea Ophthalmopsylla praefecta

On hundred and one cases of castrated phallosomes in males and 40 cases of hypoplastic spermatheca in females were recognized in the examination of 314 fleas Ophthalmopsylla praefecta pracfecta from a nest of Citellus dauricus in Jilin. Morphological descriptions are made in the paper. Further reviewing the specimens available, the authors find a higher rate of genital teratogeny in fleas off the rat Citellus and teratogenic rates are not related to geographic distribution.
