The novel River in the North by Zhang Cheng-zhi displays the ardent youth＇s pursuit in life with the full poetic flavor, while the action of protagonist＇s challenge for life limit with destiny in Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway is the mind experience of human being for thousand years. Both the novels have similarities and differences on thought and art, but each has the national characteristics and the brands of the times because of the different national background.
