Pan Lang was the famous hermit and poet in the early Northern Song period. His deeds have always fallen into oblivion, and the narrations in historical records have been contradictory. Through the textual research, we can know that Pan I.ang had lived a legendary life, always earning a living by selling medicines. He had an unrestrained disposition, yet hankered fame and position though as a hermit. He was fond of associating with the influential officials, and was twice involved into the struggles upon imperial powers, being arrested twice and sent to jail once. He once held a post of assistant teacher in the Imperial College during the Tai-zu's period, but was discharged in only several days. Then during the Zhenzong's period, he acted as a leisurely staff officer. He was friendly with Liu Kai and Wang Yucheng, and there had been a great deal of exchanges of poems among them.
