Defining the Two Relevant Conceptions of the Popular Literature

厘清“俗文学”的概念是俗文学研究的首要问题。学术界一直强调“俗文学”与“民间文学”的区别,其实“俗文学”就是“民间文学”,今天所谓“民间文学”的概念是由于历史的原因产生的。“俗文学”不同于“俗文化”,它应该是“俗”与“文学”的紧密结合体,二者缺一不可。

The definition of popular literature is a primary issue in the study of popular literature. Conventionally, the academia tends to emphasize the differences of Popular Literature and Folk Literature. As a matter of fact, they are virtually the same. The current conception of Folk Literature is a result of historical development. Unlike Popular Culture, Popular Literature is actually a close combination of ＂Popular＂ and ＂Literature＂.
