The application of euphemism and politeness principle

从语用学角度,以Leech的“礼貌原则”为理论基础,分析探讨了礼貌原则对英语委婉语的制约作用,指出委婉语遵循会话礼貌原则,是人们交际过程中谋求理想的交际效果而创造的一种有效的语言形式。

Euphemism is an important measure taken to smooth interpersonal relationship. It has the following three functions： to avoid the use of taboo words; to be less crude; to show politeness. The motivation and aim of the application of euphemism-to achieve good interpersonal relationship makes it essential to obey Politeness Principle. Meanwhile, the Politeness Principle put forward by Geoffrey Leech, which can be taken as the theoretical base. plays a leading role in the study of the pragmatic functions of euphemism.
