X ray analysis and metallography examination of a new alloy material before and after nitriding are performed. The results show that the material has fcc lattice after annealling with lattice constant of 0. 36068nm. The nitrogen content in the foil is reduced as the decomposed rate of NH3 rises when the foil is nitrided at temperature of 520℃ for 15h.γ' and ε nitride phase are not found in the microstructure if nitrogen content in the foil is less than 0. 87%. Therefore the nitrogen potential of atmosphere can be quantitatively assessed by using the alloy material.
