Objective: To investigate the effect of electrical stimulation of efferent vagus on severely scalded rats, through observing mean arterial pressure(MAP), heart rate( HR), survival time and survival rate. Methods: Twenty-four male Sprague-Dawley rats subjected to 30% TBSA Ⅲ degree scalded were employed as the model. The rats were randomly divided into four groups, including Sham group,Scald group,VGX group and stimulation (STM) group. The common carotid artery of the rats in every group were implanted into a blood pressure transducer for continuously recording of MAP and HR. Survival time and survival rate of rats were recorded at the same time. Results: Compared to those in Scald and VGX group, the MAP and HR of STM group were higher obviously, the decreasing of MAP and HR were milder, the survival time was longer, and the survival rate was higher. Conclusion: The direct electrical stimulation of the peripheral vagus nerve can significantly prevent the development of hypotension and step-down of HR in severely scalded rats, and increase survival time and survival rate, thus it might produce a potential therapeutic effect on severely scalded rats.
