文化影响音乐的一个重要机制,是它对音乐所作的功能预设。所谓功能预设,就是在音乐产生之前,文化对它将要发挥的功能已经预先设定。这种设定源于文化对音乐的特定需要,然后由这需要产生音乐对文化的功能适应,并影响着音乐的发展形态。它包含三个环节：1.文化提供对音乐的特定需要；2.特定需要形成特定的价值取向：3.特定的价值取向形成特定的音乐形态。中西音乐的不同发展形态可由此得到较好的解释。

An important point of the influence of culture on music is its functional condition to music. So-called functional condition means culture has set up the function of music before music is composed. This setting up is for the special need of culture to music. Then music meets the need of culture and is influenced by it. There are three points： first, culture offers special need to music; second, the special need forms special value; third, special value forms special music. This could better explain the different forms of development between Chinese and the west music.
