Polarized Zeeman AAS was used to determine the essential elements in the umbilicalcord blood of 155 cases. The results are as follows:the deformed neonate group:Mn(24.55±7.34)μg/L,Fe(328.5±1118.50)mg/L,Cu(0.69±0.29)mg/L,Mg(33.89±8.86)mg/L,and the normal weight neonate group:Mn (31.12±11.67)μg/L,Fe(373.68±97.80)mg/L,Cu(0. 57±0.20)mg/L,Mg(30.92±6.59)mg/L.The contents of Mn and Fe in the umbilicalcord blood of the deformed neonate group were obviously less than those of the normal weightneonate group(P<0.01and P<0.05).But the contents of both Cu and Mg are higher in thedeformed group than thoes of the normal group(P<0.01 and P<0.05).This study suggeststhat low Mn and low Fe are closly related to fetus malformation, and the formation of fettis mal-formation is closely connected with the imbalance of these essential elements in the human body.
