This paper discusses first of all four interpretations of variability of interlanguage dwelling upon dis- tinctive theories, pointing out their flaws and puts forward compensatory arguments in the light of optimality theory, with limited harmonic serialism and learnability of optimal grammar in particular. The paper concludes with its practical enlightenments concerning ESL and EFL pedagogy.
