At the turn of the 19^(th) and the 20^(th) centuries, Liang Qichao, one of the most important enlightenment thinkers in China, devoted himself to the theory and practice of literary revolution with distinctive perspicacity and confidence. The literary revolution of the early 20^(th) century marked the starting point of the difficult course of self-renewal for Chinese literature. This revolution broke the conventions of the old literature with revolutionary ideas, and took on the mission of renewing the national ethos and rejuvenating national civilization. It took the first steps in building up a new literature on the ruins of history. This paper endeavors to discuss the causes and significance of the literary revolution in the early 20^(th) century China, centering on Liang Qichao.
