The author explores the source, evolution, application and characteristics of the concept “intellectuals” in the Chinese context using the approach of historical semantics. The article discusses the development and meaning of this important concept in the West to provide clues to its historical evolution and theoretical exploration, and to reveal misunderstandings and mistaken views about this concept in Chinese academic circles. The disparity between the concept of “zhishi fenzi”(知识分子) in the Chinese context and that of “intellectuals” in the Western context is not only a question of the history of concepts, but also one of intellectual history. The history of the concept“zhishi fenzi”clearly shows its Chinese source and distinctive characteristics.
