Abstract In the carbon cycle, forests function as a relatively large, stable storage site for carbon. Photosynthesis allows leaves and needles to transform carbon dioxide in the atmosphere into carbon which is used to buildtrunks, branches, the leaf canopy and the roots. In forest ecosystems this carbon supply becomes greater asthe system develops. A not inconsiderable portion is sequestred (fixed ) in the soil after transformation. The potential storage capacity of forest ecosystems consists principally of the build up of an equilibrium in thebiomass. When this equilibrium is achieved, any further take up of carbon is annulled by an equal quantity of biomass which is decomposed. The potential for sequestration is used up. Maintenance of such a forestmeans that an amount of CO2 is continually removed from the atmosphere. The question which is answeredbelow is how much carbon is actually fixed in a forest ecosystem.
