Lung cancer causes more deaths worldwide than any other form of cancer, afflicting both men and women, The US experienced an estimated 160,000 lung cancer deaths in 2004, compared to 120,000 deaths caused by colorectal, breast and prostate cancer combined. About one million new cases break out each year worldwide, resulting in 921,000 deaths. The survival rate for lung cancer is poor: about 14 per cent over five years in the US and eight per cent over the same period in the rest of the world. In an even more worrying trend, a growing number of young people are developing lung cancer.
