On the Modes and Contributing Factors of the Beginning of Strange and Mystical Stories in Traditional Chinese Novels in Zhanghui Style during the Ming and Qing Dynasties

明清章回小说往往以神奇怪异的故事开端,但其功能与作用是不同的。考查其模式,大体可分为宣扬神异型、因果报应型、表达主旨型三种情况。其成因亦较复杂,既有神话传说、史传文学、“讲史”话本的影响,又有作家作为一种叙事策略有意而为之的因素。

Traditional Chinese novels in zhanghui style often begin with strange and mystical stories, but their functions are different. Upon investigation it is found that their modes are roughly classified in three categories： publicizing strange and mystical stories, retribution for sin and giving the gist of a book. The cause of their formation is quite complicated. There is a factor which the writer had the intention to do so as the narrative tactics as well as the influence of mythology, lengend, historical and biographical literature and scripts for historical story-telling.
