陈映真的创作被誉为“台湾乡土文学的一面旗帜”,他的早期创作特点十分突出,普遍带有浓郁的感伤、苦闷和自怜的情绪,无论是对于市镇知识分子还是社会最底层的小人物的命运,陈映真都充满了深刻的悲悯情怀。他笔下的人物几乎都陷于不同形式的毁灭里,使小说始终笼罩在一种神秘的“死亡意识”中。

Chen Ying-zhen＇s works have been reputed as ＂a banner in the local literature of Taiwan＂. With peculiar traits, his early works are universally timed with the sentiments of strong sentimentality, dejectedness and self-pity. In his works Chen Ying-zhen has displayed much compassion over the fate of both the urban intellectuals and insignificant persons at the bottom of society. All the characters portrayed by him are almost involved in various forms of destruction, thus his novels are shrouded with a kind of mysterious ＂death consciousness＂.
