The author regards the opening phrases of Berg’s Piano Sonata Op.1 as a prologue structure inChinese classical novels. The establishment of this structure - a sort of basic unit - in Berg’s work is followed by its analysis in three aspects, i.e. a cadence, two sets and three motives.
