On the Chinese Way of Thinking Affecting the Use of Concise English Expressions in Writing

一般而言,简洁用词和英语词汇量有关。但对于中国学生来说,写作中出现的重复、拖沓现象在更大程度上是受汉语思维的影响,忽略英汉两种语言的不同用词习惯而致。通过英汉重复、词化程度、常用词类及固定表达等方面对比,可以很清楚看到汉语思维对英语写作简洁用语的影响。

Conciseness in writing, generally speaking, depends on the vocabulary one has mastered. However, as far as the Chinese students are concerned, they are greatly affected by the Chinese way of thinking. A considerable percent of repetition and wordiness in student writing is the result of ignoring the differences in dictions in both languages, which is clearly shown through a contrast between the two languages in such aspects as repetition, degree of lexicalization, recurrent parts of speech and set expressions.
