英语单词有重读音节和非重读音节之分。本文对A在重读音节中的读音概括了5条拼读规则,对规则的例外概括了3条语音演变规律,从历时语言学的角度解释了这些规则的来历以及为什么会有例外。A在非重读音节中的读音又分为2种情况:模糊音和非模糊音。作者认为这是英语拼读规则的核心内容,掌握了这些就基本上掌握了英语的其他拼读规则,对学习英语有极大好处。

English syllables are classified into two kinds： stressed and unstressed. This paper puts forward five principles for stressed syllables in spelling and pronunciation and three rules governing the changing of English sound. These principles and rules explain how English has come into what it is now. As to unstressed syllables, letter A can be pronounced in two ways： vaguely and clearly. The author believes these are the keys to the learning of English.
