To elucidate whether the abnormalities in the cation transport system of the plasma membrane are genetically determined, the free cytosolic Na+, K+,Ca2+ and Mg2+ in lymphocytes from hybrid rats crossmated between spontaneously hypertensive rats(SHR)and Sprague Dawley (SD)rats have been measured, and the correlationship of the cations with the blood pressure in these hybrid rats has also been determined. In lymphocytes from hybrid rats,no correlation between cytosolic Na+, K+, Mg2+ and blood pressure was revealed. However, the cytosolic Ca2+ in lymphocytes was significantly correlated to the systolic (r= 0. 52, P<0. 05) and diastolic blood pressure ( r= 0. 62. P<0. 01) by linear regression analysis. In conclusion, the etiology and pathogenetic mechanism of hypertension are related to plasma membrane abnormality in ion transport, especially to Ca2+,which is determined genetically rather than environmentally.
