Japan - Soviet relationship after the Second War is an important bilateral relationship which affects the international relations patterns of E Asia , and has obvious characteristics in comparison with the other bilateral relations in E Asia. It has the characteristics of the relations between the defeated nation and the victor and of the relations between the leading actor and assistant in the rival camps in the cold war. Looking from geo^litics, although Japan and Russia are the neighboring countries of Northeast Asia, their relations appear more as the characteristics of European countries because of the causes of history, reality, economy and culture. Japan and the Soviet Union have great differences in ideological sphere, social system and mainstream political culture, so Japan- Soviet relationship also takes on a characteristic of relations between a social country and a capitalist country.
