A Study of Huang Entong's diplomatic concept

黄恩彤是鸦片战争时期抚夷派中的重要人物,他的对外观念虽然还是一种建立在天朝观念基础上的抚夷思想,有着重大缺陷,但也有其可取之处:一是对于西方国家的基本情况及其复杂关系有一些比较准确的了解;二是对于当时的中西之间的巨大差距和中外交涉活动准则有一些相对清醒的认识,并且努力在对外交涉实践中维护本国利益。这些在当时都是值得肯定的。

In the period of the Opium War, Huang Entong was an important person in the Fu Yi faction. His diplomatic concept was a kind of Fu Yi ideas based on the traditional Empire＇ s concept with significant deficiency, but his concept has some redeeming features. First, he precisely understood some fundamental states about the West and knew some about complex relations among them. Second, he was well aware of some diplomatic standards and huge gap between China and the West. He also tried hard to safeguard the national interests in his diplomatic practice. His efforts had been of an active significance.
