A rational thread goes through the individualist theme of Chinese contemporary literature. Based on the humanistic tradition mutually possessed by Orient and Occident, and closely related to the tradition of concern, it stresses both liberty and responsibility. The rational individualist literature is the modern transformation of the personality theory of ＂self-cultivation and raission accomplishment＂, and grows into liberalistic literature in the fierce social struggle thereafter.
