After a description of the structure and characteristics of Grimm type glow discharge source, the improvements of glow discharge source for analytical applications are described, including use of different discharge modes, reconstruction of source structure, application of source enhancement techique and change of discharge gases. The future research direction of of glow discharge source is discussed.
