Aim\ To determine the effects of angiotensin Ⅱ(AngⅡ) on the hypertrophy or hyperplasia of aortic smooth muscle cells(ASMC) from SHR and WKY in the serum free medium or 2% FCS medium.\ Methods\ Hypertrophic and hyperplastic activity of the cultured ASMC from 20 week old SHR and WKY is assessed by 3H TdR incorporation and cell number.\ Results\ As a bifunctional growth factor, AngⅡ exhibits a hypertrophic effect on ASMC in serum free medium.\ The hypertrophy and hyperplasia of SHR ASMC may be induced by AngⅡ in the medium with the existence of low concentration serum.\ AngⅡ has a stronger effect on SHR ASMC than on WKY ASMC which is blocked by AngⅡ receptor antagonist saralasin.\ Conclusion\ Containing some growthing factors in serum may influences the effects of AngⅡ on smooth muscle cells growthing.
