美国梦是美国文学中贯穿始终的主题。不同历史时期美国文学中的美国梦有着不同的表现,如殖民时期的开拓致富梦、建国后的自由民主梦、内战后的扩张发迹梦,而到一战后传统美国梦开始出现迷茫与失落,二战后则走向了绝望与反叛。

American dream is the very key for us to understand American Literature. It has different forms in every American Literature development periods：in Colonial period, the crying for wealth;in the later 18th century,the dream for democracy ; in the Civil War period,the fatancy for expansion;in the 2st World War,the dream for the Lost;and in the 2nd World War,the dream for discontent.
