This paper, by applying the psychological theories of E. H. Erikson and K. Homey et al, offers a social and psychoanalytic review of the female protagonist Violet＇s personality and behavior in Toni Morrison＇s Jazz. Our attention is focused on the causes of Violet＇s tragedy, its thematic significance, as well as the author＇s writing motive. We hold that Violet＇s experience is a full exhibition of the existential plight of the new Negroes, particularly the black females whose lives were shattered with the social changes during America＇s industrialization and urbanization era. The portrayal of this character implies Morrison＇s rational analysis of history and reality from a subtle feminist perspective.
