The Department of Chinese Literature of Tsinghua University in earlier 1930s, declared "create the new literature of our times" as its tenet, which came to the front in the academic atmosphere in which historical textual research played a dominant role then. On the one hand, the New Literature had legitimized itself by resisting classical literature tradition; on the other hand, classical literature was then the main part of the curriculums in departments of Chinese literature in universities. How would departments of Chinese literature imagine new literature under such conditions? Could classical literature be the resource of the New Literature? How would indigenous tradition conciliate with modern appeal? All these issues were reflected in the imagination of the New Literature in the Department of Chinese Literature of Tsinghua University and its frustration.
