英国著名小说家约瑟夫.康拉德晚年创作的小说《阴影线》是一部在文学批评界公认的经典作品。康拉德自己宣称《阴影线》是一部“简洁而又颇为复杂的作品”。文章在考察了该小说的表现主题、艺术手法包括叙述手法的基础上,指出了它的“简洁”和“复杂”之处及它们之间的对立统一关系,认为《阴影线》就像一幅中国的写意画,正是由于各种对立统一的艺术因素才使该作品呈现出一种立体感,成为一部宽广而又厚重的作品。

The famous British novelist, Joseph Conrad＇s novel ＂The Shadow Line＂ is his masterpiece written at his later age. He commented that this novel is ＂succinct but complex＂. Based on the study of the theme, artistic method including narrative strive, it is concluded that the relation between succinctness and complexity is antagonistic unity. The work is like a Chinese painting, whose sense of solid comes from all antagonistic factors, which makes a great work.
