Sample survey on utilization of digital literature at Guangdong academic libraries

本文分析了广东省高校数字文献资源整体状况,并对部分高校的读者抽样调查和采访,指出目前高校数字文献利用率处于不理想的状况,并提出改进措施。

The distribution of digital literature at college-university libraries is badly unbalanced across Guangdong Province. A sample survey just conducted reveals its features： the differentiation is increasing between the rich and the poor; what is worse, there is being the Mathew effect that the gap is widening with time; the majority of the literature available are the same or similar and are provided by the limited number of websites; and more schools purchase the few most commonly-used databases than those who develop their own. Results of the survey show that some facts, including nearly 40% surveyed selected ＂English＂ as to answer the question ＂What is your favorite language the digital literature should be presented in？＂ At the same time, nearly 30% said ＂I don＇ t know ＂ to the same question. Ways to enhance the utilization are suggested. First of all, measures should be taken to build up a central platform for different colleges and universities to share digital literature from. Then, individual institutions should make efforts to develop database of their own. Additionally, they should learn from their counterparts in other provinces.
