Published in 1851, it was a runaway best seller. More than 300 000 copies were sold in the first year, had within ten years the book had sold more than 2 million copies, becoming the alltime American best seller in proportion to population. Turned into a play that remained popular throughout the nineteenth century, Uncle Tom's Cabin reached an even wider audience.
