Immigrants to Lin'an, the capital city of the Southern Song Dynasty, may be classified into three groups: those from the North at the turn of the Northern and the Southern Song Dynasty, new comers from the North and the Northeast in the Southern Song, and those from the South. Influenced by the native cultures of these immigrants, a merging of cultures occurred in Lin'an. The indigenous southern culture experienced a shift to a culture based on northern characteristics with northern nomadic influences. However, the local culture of Lin'an finally evolved into one that was based mainly on southern characteristics yet bore some influences from northern traditions of the remote past.
