After an explanation of the meaning and theory foundation of the virtual product development technology, this article analyzes the characteristics and developing status of petroleum machinery in China, and expounds the system architecture of the virtual product development technology for petroleum machinery and the key problems needed to be solved. The application of VPD technology is introduced in the domestic and foreign field of machinery. Through analysis of the model of research and development of our petroleum mechanical products, and combination of the characteristics and prospects of VPD technology, the paper points out China should intensify efforts in the research of VPD technology application.
