Digital elevation model (DEM) was buih and used in habitats research of Takin (B.taxicolor. taxcicolor), a kind endangered and rare species anintal distributed mainly in Gaoligong Mountain area. DEM, slope model and vegetation distribution model were overlapped to pruduce digital terrain model (DTM). DTM was appliecl very well in the research of Takin habitat in the north Gaoligong mountain. Comparing with the ecological behavior of Takin and filed work, the potential habitat area of Takin had been identified based on indicators (elevation, slope and vegetatiun area). Elevation, slope, vegetation were used to assess and to classify Takin's potential habitat. The result shows that large region is suitable for Takin's living in the study area without human disturbance, meanwhile, it illuminates that it is possible for Takin had been distributed in this region long ago. The habitat's area is suitable for Takin living is reduced and the area of unsuitable habitat is increased year after year, during the period from 1974 to 2004.
