This paper presents a study on the fundamental concept of the resolution of television and relevant technical data concerning the newest scanning system of HDTV, and thereafter a summary of main achievements of technical research in cinematography and HDTV carried out worldwide on this subject. The basic conclusion is the picture quality of HDTV can match that of 35mm motion picture release film showed in cinema. This article offers a profound and concise technical background for the study of picture quality of television and shall promote the development of HDTV television in our country.
