西学东渐是晚明学术发展史上的一大公案。明代中晚期,社会经济的发展,自由开放的学术空气,经世致用的实学思潮和注重实证精神的科学思潮,给西学及其文献的传播提供了难得的机遇和学术环境;晚明印刷技术的改进和提高,刻书、藏书等文化事业的发展,为西学文献的刊刻及其在士林学界的流布创造了积极条件。

The time and reasons for the introduction of western culture is a big academic controversy. The introduction was mainly through literature. There was an agreeable environment. With the development of economy, there appeared free academic discussions, practical ideas and scientific atmosphere; the development of printing technology and corresponding development of publishing was also a positive factor for such introduction.
