Kafka at Seaside by Murakami Haruki is a typically modern novel in terms of narration. The novel borrows the traditional genre "mythology" to construct an open intertextual narrative text. The novel also makes use of devices like music and painting to discontinue the narrative time, forming a narrative structure which transcends time and space. The mixture of fantasy and reality unites the life of an ordinary "Ⅰ" (small event) with the life of an old man named Nakada in the background of WW Ⅱ (hidden great event). Thus, the purpose of viewing the ordinary life through the changes of the whole society is achieved.
