A Feminist Study of Washington Irving's The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Its Movie Version The Sleepy Hollow

华盛顿·欧文被誉为美国文学之父。1999年,好莱坞导演蒂姆·伯顿将欧文最著名的短篇小说《睡谷传说》改变成电影《断头谷》,但这部改编作品被评论为“与原作毫无共同之处”。本文从女性主义理论的角度,对两部作品进行解读,从而得出结论虽然两部艺术作品看似极为不同,但艺术家在艺术创作中,却不约而同地在作品中表现出强烈的男权意识和男性话语在艺术作品中的强势地位。

Washington Irving is called ＂Father of American Literature＂ while Tim Burton is a gifted director in Hollywood. In 1999, Tim Burton adapted Irving＇s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow into a movie, which is thought to ＂have nothing in common with Irving＇s short story＂. Through a feminist study of both Irving＇s short story and the movie, this essay intends to prove that, although seemingly quite different, the two artistic works have at least one point in common the dominant position of male discourse and the male authority consciousness.
