Based on a discussion on the theories of historical narration and national identity, this paper looks at Scottish literary works of different times and provides an analysis of mythicised representations of William Wallace, the national hero of Scotland, in Scottish literature. The paper suggests how the Wallace narratives develop in history, penetrate into contemporary politics and popular culture, and influence the way the Scottish national identity is constructed.
