Philosophers Vying with Poets--Unique Cultural Landscape on the Parnassus in the Wei and the Jin Dynasties

魏晋诗坛哲人群体异军突起,形成了与传统诗人群体抗衡的态势。魏晋固然也有绍续传统诗学重感物吟志的抒情诗篇及抒情诗人,但更重要的是重玄悟道的哲人之诗及哲人精神的兴起。魏晋玄言诗人大多以谈玄名家,而非以诗情擅长。新兴哲人对抗传统诗人,占据时代中心位置,是魏晋文化版图上的重要现象。

The Wei and the Jin Dynasties witnessed a new force of philosophers on the Parnassus and the new force constituted the rivalry to the traditional poets. Although traditional romantic poets and poems could still be found in the two dynasties, the emergence of poems and of philosophical spirits by metaphysical poets presents the most important scene. The metaphysical poets in the period were mostly good at metaphysics instead of poetry proper. The fact that the newly-emerged philosophers entered into rivalry with traditional poets and acted in the spotlight of the times was an important phenomenon in the cultural domain of the Wei and the Jin Dynasties.
