Guided by Sperber and Wilson＇ s relevance theory, this paper explains the theory of the pragmatic inference and analyzes the relationship between the pragmatic inference and the understanding of the meaning, in order to investigate the application of the pragmatic inference in the practical study of translation from the perspectives of literal and free translation principles.
