Addresses play an important role in different languages and cultures ; they are the universal phenomenon of human civilization. Each culture has its unique addresses. Through examples, this paper analyses the gains and losses of Chinese humble and respectful addresses in pragmatic translation. In order to gain equivalent illocutionary force of an original message, it is sometimes inevitable to lose the semantic meaning, the cultural information and the stylistic effect.
