On the Relativity of the Linguistic Sign's Arbitrariness

现代语言学之父索绪尔认为语言符号由声音形式和意义内容构成,是音与义相结合的统一体。语言符号的所指(声音形式)和能指(意义内容)之间没有内在的、必然的联系,因而是任意的。但是语言符号的任意性特征是有条件的,只有充分考虑到语言符号的社会性、系统性、语言构造的合成性中的理据特点,才能正确地把握语言的这一重要特性。

According to F. De. Saussure, the father of modern linguistics, arbitrariness is the primary principle of the linguistic sign. To understand it properly, sociality, compositionality and systemicality of the linguistic sign should also be taken into account.
